Empuries

The first stop of our field trip- the runes of the ancient Greek and Roman cities in Empuries!

Empuries is made up of two separate ruinous cities- the Roman and Greek. The Greek was located closer to the coast and when the Romans built their city, instead of demolishing the Greek city, located their city further behind the existing city so that  it could act as a protective buffer.

Salses

The Fortresse de Salses was a strange place, designed with twisting hallways and uneven floors in order to make attacking the fort difficult. Despite the maze-like corridors and uneven steps, the fortress was seized and changed hands between the French and the Spanish several times before the border of France was moved and the it officially became French property.

The Medieval village is completely enclosed in walls and  has a castle in it! Believe it or not, castles are not what the Disney movies show. I would like to see more castles and compare them, but the two I've seen so far are more like defensive strongholds than places for princesses and princes. But I did feel Iike a princess when I was sketching from the tower.
